How To Prevent Damp In Your Basement

Why It's Important To Prevent Damp

Damp conditions in the basement can lead to a multitude of problems for you and other residents. If left untreated, damp in the basement can spread to the rest of the house quickly, so it’s important to regularly check for any signs of damp. The more obvious signs are peeling wallpaper, dark patches on walls and flooring, and signs of mould on furniture or walls.

When it comes to preventing damp, our team are here to help.

Damp conditions promote the growth of mould and bacteria, which can lead to serious health problems for anyone living in your home, as well as damaging the integrity of your home. We’ve put together a few tips to help prevent damp and deal with moisture in your basement – but if you spot any signs of damp or mould, it’s important to contact a professional as soon as possible and get it dealt with. Here we’ve listed a few handy tips to keep your basement damp-free.

Check For Interior Leaks.

This may seem like an obvious point – but it’s not always that you can spot a leak straight away. A leaking shower, bathtub, toilet or pipe can all cause massive problems when it comes to moisture and damp in the basement. Look for any patches of moisture on walls or the roof to help determine where the leak is coming from. Then, it’s just a matter of sealing up the leaky culprit – or calling a plumber to sort it for you.

Check For Cracks In Walls & Foundations.

Cracks in walls – no matter how small – can be a major cause of damp and moisture. Water can find its way through even the smallest gaps in walls. Sometimes the moisture and damp can be the cause of the cracks themselves. Either way, it’s important to deal with any cracks before they grow and cause an even bigger problem.

Ensure Roof Water Is Drained Properly.

An effective draining, gutter and downspout system is imperative to keeping your house and basement moisture-free. The purpose of these is to direct water away from your foundations. If they aren’t working properly or are blocked, water could be pouring straight off the roof and accumulating in the soil right around your house. Eventually, the moisture will start draining straight through to your foundations – and your basement.

Install A Dehumidifier.

If you’ve located every possible source of damp but the room still smells musty and feels humid, a dehumidifier might be the way to go. A quality dehumidifier can take gallons of water from the air every day. Just remember to empty it out every now and then!

Waterproof The Inner Basement Walls.

If you’re looking for a professional way to prevent damp in your basement, Basement Tanking, Damp Coursing or Inner Wall Waterproofing are all brilliant solutions. Basement Tanking involves installing a waterproof coating to the inner walls of the basement to ensure no moisture can enter the room.
